Registering a design is less expensive than obtaining a patent.

 

Design registration gives you the exclusive right to use your design for items within the class for which you have registered.

To register a design than it must be new and original. Specifically, a design which has either been disclosed to the public anywhere, with certain exceptions, or is not significantly distinguishable from known designs, or comprises or contains scandalous or obscene matter is prohibited from registration.
